Best of 2013: Movies

Best of 2013: Movies Edition

Best Mainstream Horror Movie:

Winner: The Evil Dead

Why?: The Evil Dead was a fantastic rendition of the original by Sam Rami, not quite a remake, but still true to its core, The Evil Dead satisfied fans of the genre. I am logging for a sequel, or the possible Army of Darkness 2 that will combine the two series.
Honorable Mention: The Conjuring and Mama

Best Lesser Known Horror Movie:

Winner: ABC's of Death

Why?: Don't let the IMDB reviews fool you, ABC's of Death is a great addition to horror and took the anthology horror genre past where "V/H/S" and "Trick R' Treat" took us. Yes, some of the movies left you scratching your head and wanting more, but overall films like "L is for Libido", "Y is for Youngbuck", and others made the movie fantastic. We are very excited about ABC's of Death 2, and even though our entry wasn't picked, we are very happy we had the opportunity to be apart of the film. You can view our entry here: "M is for Mad Cow".
Honorable Mention: V/H/S 2 and American Mary

Horror Movie That Left Us Disappointed:

Winner (Tie): World War Z, The Purge, and Lords of Salem

Why?: Let's start with the colossal budgeted "World War Z". The effects and the storyline, up until the end, were fantastic. One who is a fan of the genre and movies in particular, will notice that the film seemed very rushed with the present ending. I almost hoped for an ending that was sad that showed his family not surviving, but instead it ended with a happy but short ending.

Now to the very profitable "The Purge". What a fantastic premise. America is perfect with minimal crime and low unemployment, but once a year the government allows "anything to go". The problem with "The Purge" is that you could predict the entire movie through the first 10 minutes. The kids in the movie are idiotic and need to be beaten. A fantastic premise with lackluster mechanics.

First let me tell everyone that I'm a massive Rob Zombie fan. As you can tell from our blog, we have covered the "Night of the Living Dreads" tour and had a blast. Rob is a very creative person that has a great vision for our genre. This was true until "The Lords of Salem". Although I think Sheri Moon acted very well, I think that Rob tried too hard to be Kubrick and he missed. Overall I hope Rob gets back into the chair and directs more classics like "The Devil's Rejects" and "Halloween". His next film is going to be a hockey based film. We shall see where that goes...
